Bed Sharing and Weight Loss

Sleep is one of the most important things we need to stay healthy. It’s proven that people who get more sleep than others are able to lose more weight. Therein seems to lye the problem…being a new mom it’s impossible to get enough sleep right? Wrong! I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to get enough sleep after I had the baby. I am addicted to sleep, to say the least. I’ve always been one of those people that sleeps somewhere between 8-10 hours a night. I need it. Well I took it seriously when someone told me to nap when the baby naps.

I also had purchased a co-sleeper bassinet to keep next to my side of the bed to make it easier to breastfeed at night and hopefully get more sleep that way. I tried that for a few nights but it felt like the same situation as having her in a crib across the room. I still had to fully wake up, pick her up and then take the time to try and get her back to sleep and put her down into the co-sleeper without her waking up again. Sometimes it would take a while. Then one night while she was nursing while I was lying on my side I fell asleep and so did she. I awoke a few hours later a little startled but there we were in the exact position I fell asleep in. I hadn’t budged an inch and she was still latched on sleeping like a champ. This was the beginning of our new bed sharing arrangement and we’ve never looked back. I love it and so does she!

We both get so much more sleep and she gets to nurse whenever she needs to. Half the time I don’t even know how many times a night she feeds because if I’m awake it’s only for a few seconds while she latches on. She almost never fully wakes up and opens her eyes either. She just roots around and latches on, eats and then drifts back off into a deep slumber. Once or twice a night I’ll wake up long enough to switch sides so I don’t get engorged. The only time I’ve ever been woken up by a crying baby is when she has been sick or teething. Other than that our bed sharing situation is perfect for our breastfeeding relationship, my weight loss and our moods during the day! Now that she is 9 months I still will take a nap with her usually once a day. Some days I can’t but if I’m ever feeling a bit tired and whatever needs to be done can be done later I’ll just lay down with her.
